Harry Reid: Obama ‘knows how to destroy terrorists’

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he supports President Obama’s strategy for fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria because “the president knows how to destroy terrorists.”

That strategy, Reid said, includes bombing Islamic State strongholds without putting U.S. troops on the ground.

“Airstrikes and strategic use of drones and, of course, covert action are the most effective way to take out [Islamic State] without committing troops — American troops — troops in harms way,” the Nevada Democrat said on the Senate floor Wednesday morning.

“So I support President Obama’s decision not to send in ground troops.”

Reid’s comments came a day after he and other top congressional leaders met with the president at the White House to discuss the administration’s strategy for combating the Islamic State.

The president will go on national TV Wednesday night to make his case to the public for combating the Islamic State.

“I say to Democrats and Republicans, let’s destroy these despicable terrorists, but let’s do it the right way this time,” Reid said. “The president knows how to destroy terrorists and their organizations. Osama bin Laden is proof of that.”
