A top administration official pushed back against Congress and President-elect Trump’s priority to repeal Obamacare, which is going through its fourth open enrollment period now.
“The Affordable Care Act is the law of the land,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell during a White House briefing Monday. “We’ve still got work to do and right now during this open enrollment we are going to do it.”
The law faces an uncertain future as both Trump and the GOP-controlled Congress have made repeal a major priority in January.
Burwell referenced the questions people have asked about the law’s fate after the election last week. “The American people have already gone ahead and answered that question,” she said.
Burwell added that more than 100,000 people signed up for coverage on healthcare.gov, which is used by residents in 38 states to sign up for Obamacare, on the day after the election.
“People still want and still need affordable, quality coverage in 2017, and healthcare.gov still offers it,” she said.
