Hillary Clinton’s team is raising questions again about whether Donald Trump has dangerous foreign ties, and they highlighted a report Friday alleging U.S. officials are investigating whether one of the GOP nominee’s advisers has connections to the Kremlin.
“We’ve never seen anything like this in American politics. Every day seems to cast new doubts on what’s truly driving Donald Trump’s decision-making: the interests of the American people or his own bottom line,” Hillary for America senior national spokesperson Glen Caplin said in a statement.
“He needs to immediately disclose the full extent of his business relationships and foreign assets so the voters can make that determination for themselves,” the statement added.
Federal officials are looking into whether one of Trump’s foreign policy advisers, Carter Page, has been in contact with Russian officials. U.S. authorities are investigating whether Page has held talks about the possibility of the U.S. lifting its sanctions on Russia if Trump takes the White House in November, Yahoo reported Friday.
Page’s reportedly “extensive business interests” in Russia have become a topic of discussion among top-ranking members of Congress as they meet to discuss whether the Kremlin has been trying to influence the U.S. election, the report claimed, citing anonymous sources.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, notified FBI Director James Comey in a letter recently claiming there have been reports of meetings this summer between members of Trump’s foreign policy team and “high ranking sanctioned individuals.”
Reid’s letter suggested these reports serve as proof of “significant and disturbing ties” between the GOP nominee’s team and the Kremlin, and he urged the FBI to follow up with an investigation.
“Some of those briefed were ‘taken aback’ when they learned about Page’s contacts in Moscow, viewing them as a possible back channel to the Russians that could undercut U.S. foreign policy,” Yahoo reported.
“U.S. officials in the briefings indicated that intelligence reports about the adviser’s talks with senior Russian officials close to President Vladimir Putin were being ‘actively monitored and investigated,'” the report added, again citing its anonymous source.
Trump first identified Page as one of his advisers during an interview in March with the Washington Post’s editorial board.
For the Clinton campaign, which has hounded the GOP nominee with claims he is comprised by his reported ties to Russia, the latest scoop from Yahoo is just another reminder that Trump can’t be trusted with the Oval Office.
“It’s chilling to learn that U.S. intelligence officials are conducting a probe into suspected meetings between Trump’s foreign policy adviser … and members of Putin’s inner circle while in Moscow,” Caplin’s statement said Friday. “This is serious business and voters deserve the facts before election day.”
