Davis already busy as presumed councilman

Derrick Leon Davis isn’t officially the newest member of the Prince George’s County Council, but he’s already making his presence felt.

Davis was an active participant at a redistricting work session on Monday, where the council worked to redraw the lines of the county’s nine districts.

During an extended break during the work session, Davis was a voice in the ears of County Council members, pulling them aside for private discussions and working with them as the debate over various municipalities, county residents and district lines waged on into the afternoon.

Davis must still face Day Gardner, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary, in a general election race on Oct. 18 that is considered a formality in predominantly democratic Prince George’s County.

With more than 55 percent of the votes, Davis easily defeated a field of 13 other candidates in a special primary election on Sept. 20, held to replace former County Councilwoman Leslie Johnson, who resigned in July.

Davis is the chairman of the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund, a board he was appointed to by Gov. Martin O’Malley.

Davis said it was important for him to come represent District 6, at least as a citizen, to help keep the district intact.
