Police have arrested a 16-year-old girl in connection with a hit-and-run that occurred on July 1, according to the victim of the crime.
Andrew Bennett and his son were biking north on Valencia Street – 4-year-old Robby was on a tandem-bike attachment to his father’s 10-speed – en route to the California Academy of Science when the driver of a silver PT Cruiser “gunned through the intersection” against the light and hit the front wheel of their bike. Bennett and Robby both flew through the air and landed in the middle of the intersection. Bennett suffered a broken back but his son, miraculously, was relatively unscathed.
Several people witnessed the accident but none were able to give inspectors the entire license plate number. In the days after the arrest, Bennett plastered the intersection and other nearby intersections with fliers asking more witnesses to come forward.
On Thursday, Bennett said police were finally able to make an arrest. The 16-year-old girl was arrested on the charge of felony hit-and-run, Bennet said.
Bennett credited the investigator assigned to the case for bringing it to a resolution.
“This is a welcome surprise and is a testament to the diligence and care of the investigating officer, inspector James Custer,” Bennett said. “If SFPD could clone him, there would be no unsolved crime in The City.”
