NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — NASA’S Langley Research Center is preparing for its first open house in five years.
The facility will open its gates to the public on Saturday and provide free bus tours to more than a dozen of its facilities.
The last time Langley held an open house it attracted about 20,000 visitors.
The Hampton facility has played a critical role in the U.S. space program. The nation’s first astronauts trained there and the space shuttle was tested in its wind tunnels.
Its current research includes testing water landings for a mockup of the Orion space capsule, which eventually will take astronauts beyond Earth’s orbit for the first time.
Visitors should enter through the main gate on Commander Shepard Boulevard. Visitors are not allowed to bring weapons or computers onto the center.
