Two Mormon missionaries who were wounded in the Brussels terrorist attacks last week have returned to their home state of Utah for medical treatment.
Mason Wells, 19, and Joseph Empey, 20, were among four Mormon missionaries caught in the bombings at the Brussels airport in Belgium last Tuesday. Wells and Empey arrived at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City Tuesday in fair condition, according to hospital officials.
Wells received burns and severed his Achilles tendon during the March 22 attacks. He was also present at the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, but was not hurt in those attacks.
Empey suffered more severe injuries, including burns to his hands, face and head, as well as shrapnel in his legs.
The other two missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will remain overseas. The Utahns had been at the airport that day to accompany one of the other missionaries on a flight to Cleveland, Ohio.
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks. Belgian law enforcement officials have conducted nightly raids in the capital city, detaining nearly a dozen suspects connected to the incident.
