Wright path leads to Hoyas

St. John’s High’s Chris Wright had plenty of options when it came to a college basketball scholarship. But his rollercoaster recruiting ride ended where it started: home.

Wright announced he verbally committed to Georgetown at a news conference at St. John’s on Tuesday.

The senior point guard chose the Hoyas over finalists Pittsburgh and North Carolina State, the school he originally committed to in January, months before head coach Herb Sendek left for the same job at Arizona State. Wright quickly backed off his commitment to the Wolfpack and re-opened his recruiting. Only then did Georgetown enter the process.

“I wasn’t interested in Georgetown at all back when I committed to N.C. State just because I really didn’t know what direction the program was going,” Wright said. “But they’re starting to get back to that old prominence everyone talks about in the [1980s] when they were one of the best teams in the country every year. I think I can help them get there.”

The 6-foot Wright is the No. 6-rated senior point guard in the nation by the recruiting Web site scout.com. He averaged 22.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game last season to help the Cadets to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship game, where they fell to DeMatha High and star shooting guard Austin Freeman, who has also verbally committed to the Hoyas. Freeman is ranked by scout.com as the nation’s No. 3 shooting guard. Neither player can make their commitment official until the weeklong early signing period that begins Nov. 7.
