Bill de Blasio isn’t buying Mitt Romney’s recent focus on the need to lift Americans out of poverty.
The New York City mayor in an interview with Politico Sunday dubbed Romney “disingenuous” for suddenly focusing on income inequality ahead of a possible 2016 presidential campaign.
“Doing it in such a ham-handed manner in what appears to be a deathbed conversion is a strange way to suddenly come out of the box with it, and I find it disingenuous, and I think a lot of other people will too,” explained de Blasio. “This is a guy who was pretty brazenly uninterested in addressing income inequality in 2012.”
Romney specifically singled out poverty as an issue in need of attention when delivering remarks at the Republican National Committee’s winter meeting in San Diego, California, Friday.
“Under President Obama, the rich have gotten richer, income inequality has gotten worse and there are more people in poverty than ever before,” Romney explained. “Their liberal policies are good every four years for a campaign, but they don’t get the job done.”
“The only policies that will reach into the hearts of the American people and pull people out of poverty and break the cycle of poverty are Republican principles, conservative principles,” he added.
Romney did not offer a firm answer at the RNC event as to whether or not he plans to run for the Oval Office, but buzz has been swirling about the former Republican presidential candidate gearing up for a 2016 campaign.
