The State Department’s top spokesman appeared to call out a reporter for playing “Pokemon Go” during a terrorism briefing on Thursday.
In the middle of his sentence about the Islamic State, Kirby’s attention focused on a reporter to his right.
“As the secretary said earlier today, though, and I think it’s an important reminder …” Kirby says before suddenly commenting, “You’re playing that Pokemon thing right there, aren’t you?”
The unidentified reporter responds: “I’m just keeping an eye on it.”
Kirby then resumes his briefing, remarking, “… And we will continue to work with our coalition partners to defeat [ISIS].”
He pauses, then turns to his right and asks, “Did you get one?”
“No. The signal is not very good,” the reporter replies.
(We’re left wondering if he had any success for the rest of the briefing.)
“Pokemon Go” is a free, location-based virtual reality game for mobile devices. It is now live in may parts of the world, allowing users to catch Pokemon and battle other users, an ode to the famous franchise from the 1990s.
