In last weekend?s loss to Maryland, the Towson men?s lacrosse team played well in the second half and essentially dominated play. But it wasn?t enough.
Coach Tony Seaman knows that his No. 16 Tigers can play. But he also knows No. 6 Virginia, the defending national champion, is nearly impossible to beat at home. So his goal in today?s 1 p.m. game in Charlottesville is to keep his team calm and come out shooting well. That?s a virtual must for Towson (2-1) to break a six-game losing streak against the Cavaliers (5-1).
The last time Towson defeated Virginia was in 1991, a 14-13 upset in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
“We just need to make sure we don?t let them jump out to a big lead,” Seaman said, recalling last week?s rough start against the Terps.
The game can be heard live on 89.7 FM.
UMBC vs. MARYLAND
UMBC (3-2) will visit Maryland (4-2) today in a 1 p.m. game, which can be seen live on WMAR and ESPNU.
The Terps are coming off a 13-4 Tuesday win over Lafayette. Led by senior Michael Phipps? four goals and two assists, the Terps? offense is averaging 10.2 goals per game.
The Retrievers are coming off an 11-10 double-overtime win over Penn, in which freshman Cayle Radcliffe scored six goals, a school record for a freshman.
LOYOLA
The Greyhounds (2-2) host St. John?s (2-4) today to open a three-game set at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. The Greyhounds enter the weekend having toppled Penn State and then-No. 1 Duke. Loyola has won the past two meetings, both low-scoring affairs, against the Red Storm.
JOHNS HOPKINS
Today?s game between Johns Hopkins and Syracuse in New York marks the 44th meeting between two storied programs. The No. 3 Blue Jays are 3-1, while the No. 8 Orange are 2-2. The Blue Jays will be out for revenge after Syracuse eliminated them from the 2006 NCAA tournament with a 13-12 semifinal win.
The 3:30 p.m. game will be televised live on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network and broadcast on 1300 AM and on www.hopkinssports.com.
NAVY
Looking to remain undefeated, No. 5 Navy (5-0) visits Holy Cross (2-4) today at 1 p.m. The Midshipmen are thriving behind a high-powered offense, which averages 12 goals per game and hits on 57 percent of its shots.
