“I think we are [too tough],” Rather said on Morning Joe when asked. “And we can see it and hear it today in the reaction to President Obama’s appearance last night in Kabul . . . I think we are too tough on our presidents.” He added that sometimes Americans “arent’ tough enough on our presidents,” who can receive “too much leeway.”
Obama has faced criticism for exploiting the killing of Osama bin Laden for political gain, after he released two campaign videos highlighting the killing, suggested that Mitt Romney would not have moved to kill bin Laden given the opportunity, and then capped the campaign weekend with a surprise speech from Afghanistan.
Rather seemed to ratify those criticisms when he called Obama’s Kabul speech “incomplete,” adding that it raised “all kinds of questions about what is he really talking about here.”
