Social Security update: SSI recipients to get first 2023 payment of $914 on Dec. 30

Supplemental Security Income recipients will be given the second of two payments this month on Dec. 30, with the second payment at $914 being slightly larger than the first.

Dec. 30’s payment will be slightly bigger than the first SSI payment of $841 that recipients were given on Dec. 1 in response to increasing inflation. The two payments will equal a total of $1,755, according to the Social Security Administration.

STIMULUS UPDATE: DIRECT ONE-TIME $1,500 BONUS CHECK PAYMENTS BEING SENT OUT IN JUST TWO DAYS

SSI recipients are receiving two payments this month due to the first day of next month, January, falling on a national holiday, New Year’s Day. The SSA issues checks every month on the business day prior to months that begin on a weekend or holiday to make sure beneficiaries have the check by the first of the month, according to the agency.

The second December payments are slightly higher than the payment earlier this month thanks to the yearly cost-of-living adjustments made to keep up with inflation. This year’s COLA is 8.7%, meaning all SSA payments, including SSI, will be 8.7% higher than payments made in 2022.

Essential persons, meaning those who live with a person receiving SSI and provide necessary care, will also get a payment on Dec. 30 worth $458, slightly higher than the $421 payment they received on Dec. 1. Eligible couples will receive two payments of $1,261 for the month of December, with monthly payments increasing next year to $1,371.

Dec. 30’s payment will mark the first of 2023 SSI payments because there will be no payment for SSI recipients in January of next year. A total of 12 SSI payments are issued by the SSA every year so that recipients get one payment every month.

In 2023, recipients will be given two payments within the same month several times due to the first of the month falling on a weekend or a holiday. These months include April, June, September, and December.
