Sex offender believed to be hiding in MontCo woods

U.S. marshals are looking for a convicted child sex offender with a long rap sheet who authorities believe is hiding out in the woods in Montgomery County.

James “Doodle” Graury is this week’s “Most Wanted” fugitive, and authorities are asking for help from readers of The Washington Examiner in tracking track him down. Graury, 52, has a history of arrests for assault, rape, narcotics, probation violations. He was convicted of child sex assault in Montgomery County in 2002, and continuously fails to register as required, marshals officials said.

Graury has been difficult to find because he is known to live in a tent in wooded areas in upper Montgomery County, said Matt Burke, of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force.

“We need the public’s help in locating Graury because of the extent he is willing to go to stay clear of law enforcement,” Burke said.

He may support himself by panhandling but has worked as at cabinet refinishing, officials said. If he’s hiding in the woods, someone is probably helping him to get by, Burke said.

“These are the people we need to contact us so that we can get Graury back under supervision,” he said.

Graury is listed as 6 feet tall, 150 pounds and has a distinctive skull and cross bones tattoo on his chest, marshals said. He has also lived in Poolesville, Germantown and Rockville.

Anyone with information about Graury’s whereabouts can contact the task force at 301-489-1717 or 800-336-0201.

Information provided by readers of The Examiner has led to at least 21 fugitives going back behind bars.

The Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, run by the U.S. Marshals Service, includes 30 federal, state and local agencies from Baltimore to Norfolk. The unit has captured more than 29,000 wanted fugitives since its creation in 2004.
