Miss America a history buff but a D.C. first-timer

At Wednesday night’s Washington Press Club Foundation dinner, Washington got its first glimpse of the new Miss America: Kirsten Haglund of Michigan. And it was Ms. Haglund’s first glimpse of Washington, too. Amazingly, Haglund’s visit Wednesday marked the blond bombshell’s first trip to D.C.

“No junior high school field trip?” we asked. “Amazingly, no!” she replied. “I’m not quite sure why that was.” Although Haglund didn’t stay long (she arrived Wednesday afternoon and departed for Atlantic City, N.J., on Thursday), she hopes to spend more time in our fair city.

“I’m a huge history buff,” she said. But don’t expect her to talk politics. “No, no, no, we’re not doing politics,” Haglund’s personal escort said. Haglund says she’ll be back soon for a USO benefit and to raise awareness for eating disorders (Haglund battled anorexia when she was younger).

Also in attendance: Ted Danson, Rita Cosby and the stars from “The Wire” — Clark Johnston, Bill Zorzi and Todd Scofield. All attended as guests of CQ, which also sponsored the dinner’s after party. It also became clear that if you’re a woman attending one of these black-tie galas, you could do worse that to get yourself seated next to Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev. When one of Berkley’s tablemates seemed to be having trouble with her dress, we saw Berkley spring into action — she whisked the woman past the scurrying waiters, through a nearby door and into the kitchen. The pair emerged a moment later, the problem evidently corrected.
