Nicki Minaj endorses Andrew Cuomo to ‘make NY even GREATER’ ahead of Democratic primary

Rapper Nicki Minaj endorsed incumbent New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday ahead of his Democratic primary against former “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon.

“New Yorkers & all NYCHA residents its [sic] time to get JUSTICE, VOTE Thur. Sept. 13 for Gov. Cuomo, Lt. Gov. Hochul & Tish James,” Minaj wrote on Twitter, referring to the NYC Housing Authority, which provides accommodation for low- and moderate-income people.

“They know how to work for the people to make NY even GREATER. Spread the word. See you at the Polls,” she sai

Minaj was raised in the New York City borough of Queens after her mother brought her to the U.S. from Trinidad and Tobago at the age of 5. She was critical of President Trump’s zero tolerance policy toward immigration in June, writing an emotional post on Instagram about how she originally crossed the U.S. border illegally as a child.

However, the award-winning artist only offered tepid support for Trump’s eventual 2016 Democratic presidential opponent Hillary Clinton before she earned her party’s nomination.

“I support her as a woman,” Minaj told Billboard in 2015. “Am I convinced that she should be the next president? I still want to be open-minded about everyone.”

Social media pundits on Wednesday quickly speculated whether Minaj’s rival Cardi B would also weigh in on a gubernatorial candidate before the New York Democratic primary on Thursday. Cardi B, a rapper from the Bronx, was captured on video last week throwing her shoe at Minaj while the pair were attending the annual Harper’s Bazaar Icons party during New York Fashion Week.

Cardi B did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner‘s request for comment about a possible endorsement.

Nixon, who has already secured New York Working Families Party’s nomination, trails behind Cuomo among Democratic voters in most polls.

Republicans named Marcus Molinaro as their nominee following their party convention in May.
