White House: ‘Absolutely ludicrous’ to suggest Saudis infected Biden on purpose

National security communications coordinator John Kirby shot down a question Wednesday about whether Saudi Arabian government officials sought to infect President Joe Biden with COVID-19.

Biden developed symptoms roughly four days after returning to Washington, D.C., from Saudi Arabia, though White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and COVID-19 coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha suggested the administration doesn’t think it matters where Biden was infected.

Kirby was asked at Wednesday’s press briefing if the administration had “ruled out the possibility that the Saudi government may have deliberately exposed the president to the coronavirus.”

He responded first by deferring questions about Biden’s medical condition to Jean-Pierre but added that he doesn’t know “where this idea is coming from.”

“The idea that a foreign nation state would deliberately try to infect the president of the United States with a virus is just ludicrous, just absolutely ludicrous,” Kirby continued. “There’s nothing to it, and it should be treated as the ridiculous idea that it is.”

Biden first tested positive for the coronavirus on July 21, and he made his first public appearance in nearly a week Wednesday after testing negative Tuesday night and again Wednesday morning.
