Delegates to the Republican and Democratic National Conventions are supposed to be some of the most politically plugged in people around.
But a gang of Republican delegates almost lost a quiz contest against a bunch of 6th graders at Minneapolis’ Mall of America Wednesday.
The setting was the “Kids Stump The Delegate Game Show” and some of the delegates included Nevada GOP delegate Serena Goldstock, Iowa delegate Mike Knopf (the youngest at the RNC), Pennsylvania delegate and Pittsburgh Penguins founder Jack McGregor and 2004 Bush/Cheney finance committee member Mike Bohtelo.
The delegates stumped on one of the most basic of questions: “When was the Declaration of Independence adopted?”
“1789.”
Sorry, delegates. That’d be 1776. And they didn’t know where Teddy Roosevelt delivered his “Speak softly but carry a big stick” line (that would be Minnesota).
Still, the delegates eked out a small victory, if only because these 6th graders didn’t know the author of this quote, “Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men.” (Answer: JFK)
