It’s not often that you get a definitive response from politicians — current or former — so when we caught up to NFL Hall of Famer Steve Largent at the 18th Annual Bobby Mitchell/Toyota Hall of Fame Golf Classic on Friday, we were taken aback by his blunt response to our very simple question: Do you miss Congress?
“Are you kidding me?!?” Largent asked with a laugh. “No, no, no, not at all. Not for a second.” Largent, you’ll recall, served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Oklahoma from 1994 until 2002. He even made a failed bid for the Republican leadership.
“There’s a coarseness there now that is just really unappealing, so no, I don’t miss it at all,” said Largent, who now serves as president and chief executive officer of CTIA — The Wireless Association. “I’m doing just fine without it.”
Still, he’s not above weighing in on the political topics of the day and said that, in the current presidential campaign, John McCain has his work cut out for him.
“I think [Barack] Obama’s got the upper hand right now,” Largent told us, “and the burden is on McCain to step up his campaign.”
