Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders took a shot at Donald Trump on Saturday, accusing the presumptive Republican presidential nominee of hypocrisy over his praise of Muhammad Ali, a devout Muslim.
Trump described Ali, who died late Friday evening, as a “wonderful guy” despite previously questioning the existence of Muslim sports heroes. Trump has also proposed implementing a “total and complete” ban on foreign Muslims seeking to enter the U.S. as a measure to protect Americans against domestic terror attacks.
“I’ve been all over this country and I’ve spoken to Muslim people. I say to those people, one of the greatest heroes in modern American history is Muhammad Ali — a very proud Muslim,” Sanders told volunteers during an impromptu press conference at his California campaign headquarters.
Turning his attention toward Trump, Sanders added: “Don’t tell us how much you love Muhammad Ali and yet you’re going to end up being prejudiced against Muslims in this country.”
The Democratic presidential hopeful previously described Ali as “not only an extraordinary athlete, but a man of great courage and humanity” in statement released shortly after the legendary boxer’s death.
