ANNAPOLIS – The Maryland General Assembly will take action Monday on a measure that would increase the sales tax on alcohol by 50 percent in July.
The measure is one of dozens that the House and Senate will be ramming through the legislature in the final hours of the 2011 session, which ends at midnight.
The Senate already approved a 50-percent increase to the alcohol sales tax, which is now set at 6 percent. The increase, up to 9 percent, would be phased in over the course of three years. The House changed the bill to enact the 9-percent rate — which would add roughly 30 cents to every $10 of alcohol — in July.
The Senate must approve the amended bill before it can pass the General Assembly.
