Huang Yu, 41, took in about $700,000 for selling the documents to an unidentified foreign spy agency from 2002 to 2011, state-backed broadcaster CCTV reported. Huang, a computer technician at a research firm, started selling the documents after he began receiving poor performance reviews, according to the Associated Press.
Huang was ultimately fired over the reviews in 2004, after which he, his wife, his former brother-in-law, and an unidentified number of former colleagues returned to purloin even more documents, travel to Southeast Asia, and sell them for cash. After Huang was arrested, 29 current employees were given administrative penalties for failing to secure the documents.
The case was highlighted by the Chinese government as part of a “public awareness” campaign centered on national security. Huang appeared on television as part of the campaign, urging others who undermine the Chinese government to turn themselves in. “It’s better for your family and for you,” Huang said.
