Terps, Irish will play at FedEx Field in 2011

The Notre Dame and Maryland football teams will meet for just the second time in history in November of 2011 and will do it at FedEx Field in Landover. The game, announced Monday by Maryland, will officially be a home game for Notre Dame, even though FedEx Field is seven miles from College Park.

“We are pleased to provide our fans a premier national-caliber game so close to our campus,” said Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow in a statement. “It will be a statement game for our Terps program.”

It is another in a series of high-profile college games recently landed by FedEx. Virginia Tech will meet Boise St. there in September. FedEx also will host Indiana-Penn State in November, Army-Navy (2011), and Cincinnati-Virginia Tech (2012). FedEx hosted Navy-Notre Dame in 1998 and USC-Virginia Tech in 2004.

“It is a privilege for FedEx Field to host one of the most storied programs in college football and match it against a university with a strong and successful local following,” said Redskins chief marketing officer Mitch Gershman in a statement. “This game will be an exciting event for our region.”

Virginia Tech and Notre Dame are leading a trend toward neutral-site games. The Irish played Washington State at the Alamodome in 2009, will face Army at Yankee Stadium in November and Arizona State at Cowboys Stadium in 2013. Tech played its 2009 opener in Atlanta against eventual national champion Alabama.
