Obama speech: Loud as a freight train

The noise at Mile High Stadium on Thursday night hit 100.3 decibels soon after Barack Obama strode out to the podium — the loudest moment of the night, as measured by our trusty noise meter from our location in the stands to the candidates left. That’s about as loud as a freight train heard from up close.

The minimum level we measured during his speech was 74.8 dB, about as loud as heavy traffic or a vacuum cleaner.

When Obama introduced his wife, Michelle, the noise hit 93.2 dB, a bit less than the 94.4 dB when he acknowledged Sen. Hillary Clinton a couple moments earlier.

Among Obama’s loudest applause lines:

-“If John McCain wants to have a debate about who has the temperament, and judgment, to serve as the next commander-in-chief, that’s a debate I’m ready to have.” (95.3 dB)

-“[Military members] have not served a red America or a blue America — they have served a United States of America.” (94.7 dB)

-“…this election has never been about me. It’s been about you.” (95.2 dB)

-“Thank you, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.” (95.0 dB)
