Trump’s pandemic approval rating declines with Republicans

President Trump’s approval rating on the coronavirus among Republican voters has reached its lowest point since April amid a surge of new cases across the United States.

In April, nearly nine out of every ten Republicans polled by Morning Consult approved of the president’s pandemic response, and only 10% disapproved. By the first week of July, the number who approved overall had fallen 11 points to 78%, with those who disapproved jumping to 18%.

According to the survey, fewer Republicans today strongly approve of Trump’s response than at any point since early April, falling from a high of 62% on April 12 to 48%, the smallest number yet.

The share of respondents who strongly disapprove has reached its highest point since April, climbing this week to 10%.

The results are from Morning Consult’s weekly coronavirus survey tracker, based on 2,200 surveys of U.S. adults and conducted July 1-4.

Cases in the U.S. are rising. In Florida, the percentage of tests that returned positive was 16.3%, the highest figure on record, and up from 15% on Sunday, according to Bloomberg. Deaths and hospitalizations have also increased.

New York has added three new states to its quarantine list, which now includes Delaware, Kansas, and Oklahoma, where the president last month held an indoor and largely mask-free rally.
