[Video] Mourdock looks to engage younger voters

Richard Lugar, R-Ind., told Red Alert Politics Saturday at the Faith and Freedom Conference that his campaign has been engaging in a considerable amount of youth outreach at campuses around his state.

A lot of younger voters have stepped forward to get involved with his campaign.

“We have tremendous College Republican groups working for us and above that young professionals,” Mourdock said. “We have young professional Republican groups around Indiana, and I’ve spent time wining and dining those groups and winning them to our cause, and they have been really energetic.”

College groups on the Democratic side are “pretty anemic” in Indiana by contrast, according to Mourdock.

He believes that Republicans need to remind young Americans that their futures are on the line as a core theme for reaching out to young people.

“All the way back in 1992 the line was ‘It’s the economy stupid,’” Mourdock said. “Everybody needs to keep understanding it’s the economy stupid in terms of finding jobs for young people.”

Mourdock sees the problem of high youth unemployment as being tied into the overall health of the economy, and he suggests reduced business regulations and lower taxes would help spur hiring.

On college costs, Mourdock believes that fiscal discipline is in order at colleges and universities to put runaway tuition into check.

He hit the administration for targeting for-profit colleges in favor of public institutions.

“They are picking winners and losers, and I think that is inherently wrong,” Mourdock said. “The fact that the costs at public [colleges and universities] is so high state to state is something that I think is going start to happen.

“We need to see more for-profit colleges, and I think that would be a good thing to bring competition.”
