The two major presidential candidates are so unpopular that Public Policy Polling (PPP) decided to mix up their recent poll with the “Giant Meteor for President” option. The Meteor enjoys 13 percent in the poll, while Hillary Clinton has 48 percent and Donald Trump has 38 percent.
Those 18-29 are the age group most likely to support the Meteor. Twenty-two percent prefer the Meteor, compared to 24 percent who favor Trump and 47 percent who favor Hillary. Trump and the Meteor are statistically tied within the margin of error.
Support for the Meteor comes from all sides of the political spectrum, including 23 percent who are somewhat or very liberal, 16 percent who are moderate, and 21 percent who are somewhat or very conservative.
Republicans and Democrats support the Meteor equally, while the support from independents is particularly significant. Twenty-seven percent support the Meteor, while 31 percent support Trump and 35 percent support Hillary in what is “functionally… a three way tie,” PPP says. “Maybe that’s who the Libertarians should have nominated,” the poll release also notes.
Although Gary Johnson is not included in poll questions with the Meteor, he has less support when compared with Hillary, Trump, and Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Johnson comes in at 5 percent, while 7 percent are undecided.
Without the Meteor, Hillary enjoys a lead with independents at 39-35 percent. She leads with young voters 57-28 percent. Overall she leads Trump 45-41 percent.
