Ex-Library of Congress employee sentenced in child porn case

A former Library of Congress employee was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession of child pornography.

William W. Smith, 53, of Silver Spring, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Peter J. Messitte to the maximum penalty allowed under federal statute.

Smith possessed more than 20,000 images of child pornography, including minors under 12. The images were electronically stored in his computers, CDs, DVDs and videocassettes in his home and office at the Library of Congress.

Prosecutors said several women have alleged that when they were young girls, Smith fondled them inappropriately at their D.C. church over a two- to three-year period. Videotapes found in Smith’s home included evidence of possible inappropriate touching of these and other young girls, prosecutors said.
