WASHINGTON (AP) — NPR is partnering with the University of New Orleans to create a new nonprofit newsroom with the city’s public radio station.
The school announced plans Friday with NPR to create a news website called NewOrleansReporter.org to provide in-depth local reporting online. Public radio station WWNO will lead the newsgathering effort, launching by the end of 2012.
The new newsroom will focus on coverage including government, business, education, criminal justice, the environment and arts and culture. Content on the web will be “open source” and free for other local and national outlets to use.
The university is launching the project based on a public radio funding model, drawing support from corporate sponsors, foundations and donations from radio listeners and website users.
NPR is consulting on technology and online revenue.
