United kicks off busy stretch

With a second match in three weeks against the Kansas City Wizards, D.C. United commences its busiest stretch of the season. Starting with Saturday’s visit to Missouri, United will play 10 games in 31 days, seven of those games during the World Cup and eight against Eastern Conference opponents.

“The most important thing is that these games are against Eastern Conference rivals. We have to be focused and concentrate,” said D.C. head coach Peter Nowak. “We’ve enjoyed the first eight games we played. As far as points, we have to make sure that we’re going to enjoy the games but also get the points.”

United’s 2-1 win over the Wizards on May 13 vaulted them into first place, a position they expect to solidify this weekend with an attacking-minded game plan even though they’re on the road.

“We want to have the mentality of winning the game, and with five forwards, I don’t think anybody knows us,” said forward Jaime Moreno of United’s lineup last weekend. “It’s definitely a positive way to play, and it shows we can play the same way at home or away.”

Note: Former Howard University forward Idris Ugriovhe and Davidson College defender John Latting are training with United this week and may feature in Sunday’s reserve match in Kansas City. District native Amir Lowery (Wake Forest) has also been training with the team.
