Environmental lawyers are preparing to sue the Trump administration once he issues his emergency order to expand a wall along the country’s southern border.
Earthjustice president Abigail Dillen said her group of environmental lawyers “must be prepared to use the full power of the law” to challenge Trump’s “cynical” move.
The group has provided lawyers in several lawsuits against the administration for waiving environmental laws and other regulations to construct portions of the wall already being built on the border.
Dillen argues Trump’s use of his emergency powers to further fund the construction of a border wall would violate the Constitution.
“The federal government has already waived dozens of laws to build destructive, polluting, and unnecessary border barriers, and now, this administration is shoving aside the constitution to try to build a symbol of hate,” Dillen said.
She argued that Congress has the authority to set spending priorities, but Trump continues to operate as if “checks and balances and the will of the people do not matter.“
Environmental groups were the first to sue Trump over his proposed border wall soon after he was sworn in as president in 2017.
