Trump blasts ‘NFL tax breaks’ and ESPN anchor Jemele Hill

In his first tweet, Trump suggested that the government change the tax law so that it no longer provides subsidies to the National Football League.

The league gave up their tax exempt status in 2015. However, individual teams are still able to receive taxpayer funds allocated by state budgets to help build and update stadiums. Lawmakers have estimated that the public pays about 70 percent of the cost for NFL stadiums.

About 40 minutes later, Trump discussed ESPN’s ratings and host Jemele Hill. Trump said there is no wonder why the sports cable network has ‘tanked,’ referencing the SportsCenter host as one reason for declining viewership.

Hill is now serving a two-week suspension following a series of tweets in which she targeted Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys. ESPN announced the suspension Monday citing a ‘social media violation.’ Jones said he will bench any player who kneels or sits for the national anthem. Hill criticized Jones saying that he is creating problems for his black players. Hill took it further by saying that people should protest Jones’ decision by no longer watching Cowboys games or buying their merchandise.

Following the sports network’s decision to suspend Hill, Reverend Al Sharpton discussed his outrage with ESPN’s decision.

Additionally, Sharpton attacked Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, calling Pence’s departure of the Colts-49ers game a ‘stunt.’ Pence left the football game after players kneeled during the anthem.

Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) slammed the president Tuesday morning, accusing Trump of not fulfilling his duties in Puerto Rico, and using his time to attack sportscasters about football.

Last month, Hill criticized President Trump, calling him a ‘white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself with other white supremacists.’ ESPN did not suspend her for the accusations. The White House said they thought Hill’s accusations of the president were a ‘fireable offense.’
