Ivanka Trump demands to know why it ‘took months’ to arrest two men accused of murdering Ahmaud Arbery

After viewing video footage that appears to show two white men hunting down and killing a black man in Georgia, Ivanka Trump demanded to know why police didn’t arrest and question the men sooner.

On Wednesday night, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced that Gregory McMichael and Travis McMichael had been arrested and charged with the death of Ahmaud Arbery. But Trump said it shouldn’t have taken the video’s release and public outcry for state officials to investigate Arbery’s death.

“While the arrest of 2 suspects in the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery is a critical step towards justice, the question that needs to be asked is why it seemingly took months, the release of a video and corresponding public outrage to catalyze action,” Trump tweeted.

A newly released cellphone video shows a pickup truck trailing Arbery on Feb. 23. Arbery, who reportedly was jogging in his neighborhood, was cornered by two men who jumped out of the vehicle with firearms. That’s when Gregory McMichael says his son got into a physical fight with Arbery before fatally wounding him with a shotgun.

The McMichaels told police they had tracked down Arbery because of a recent string of neighborhood robberies that they believed Arbery may have committed.

Arbery would have turned 26 Friday.
