Brian Smith worked his way to the top ? and he?s still growing.
The chief executive officer of Baltimore-based LpMedia, Smith started full time with the company in 2003, leaving his job as a PC technician. Smith graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in teaching electronics, and he brought his expertise to the field in electronics installation and audiovisual production and recording. Seeking out deals with Circuit City, Dell, Bose, Sears, DirecTV and Ikea, Smith strives to keep his company on the cutting edge of the audiovisual industry.
Q What is the story behind coming to LpMedia?
A LpMedia was forged by the merger of three separate technology companies, an AV recording and producing company, LP Recording; a computer technology firm called LP Infosys; and a sound and home theater installation business called Sonic Sound Engineering. I actually owned all of these companies, and the merger allowed for easy bookkeeping, as the organizations began to employ each other?s services. You see, utilizing the combined knowledge of all three organizations allows LpMedia to create innovative, custom-integrated solutions that allow clients to mix the old with the new.
Q What is the most important thing you learned coming into this job?
A One ofthe most valuable things that I?ve learned is that the success of any organization rests solely on its members. So building a team of professional craftsmen has been my goal.
Q What is the project you are most proud of at LpMedia?
A Though we are still small, we?re planning for growth by operating as a large organization. In other words, we keep everything separate. In recording and production, we are currently working on a project for Maryland Public Television. On the other side of the fence, our installation division now sells everything we install ? a project two years in the making.
Q What is your future vision for the company?
A The plan is to expand into each of the areas of multimedia, sound, video and data in ways that we consider to be more meaningful to the end user. We already hold one provisional patent in lighting automation and plan to continue research and development of exciting new home theater and entertainment products.
