Journalists riled up after Trump proclaims April ‘Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month’

Several journalists reacted with disgust Friday after President Trump declared April “National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month,” noting what they said was the irony of having the proclamation come from a man who has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women.

“At the heart of our country is the emphatic belief that every person has unique and infinite value,” Trump wrote. “We dedicate each April to raising awareness about sexual abuse and recommitting ourselves to fighting it. Women, children and men have inherent dignity that should never be violated.”

The president also wrote that he urges “all Americans, families, law enforcement, health care providers, community and faith-based organizations, and private organizations to support survivors of sexual assault and work together to prevent these crimes in their communities.”

Despite the positive message being conveyed by the White House, journalists reacted negatively to the proclamation on Twitter.

Emma Gray, executive women’s editor at the Huffington Post, said: “I wonder if Trump would encourage this same support of the 16 women who have publicly accused him of sexual assault.”

“I want to scream,” said Mashable’s Katie Dupere.

Some were subtle in their critiques, such as the Daily Beast’s Gideon Resnick, who responded with a simple “hmmm.”

Others were more blunt, such as MSNBC host Chris Hayes, who quipped: “Grab Em By The Pussy Month will be in May.”

That was a reference to a comment Trump made in a 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape that was unearthed during the election, saying that as a famous person he could “do anything.”

Mic senior writer Emily Singer asked, “Remember when he bragged about grabbing pussy?”

“So many cases DON’T get reported bc of tactics used by the president to discredit women who come forward, to encourage others not to believe,” said Lucy Westcott of Newsweek.

Vancouver radio host Drex expressed his dismay by sharing a throw-up gif from Comedy Central’s “Workaholics.”
