Sanders refuses to fade away in Iowa

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in a horserace in Iowa, as Sen. Bernie Sanders has refused to fade away with just 67 days left before the first caucus votes are cast in the Democratic primary.

According to a new Quinnipiac poll, Clinton has the support of 51 percent of Democratic voters, unchanged from a month ago. Meanwhile, Sanders saw a 2 percent increase over the month, and now has 42 percent, just 9 percent behind Clinton.

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley pulled in only 4 percent, and 3 percent were undecided ahead of Thanksgiving.

While Clinton’s lead is still significant, the poll shows that Democrats have yet to give up the idea of a challenger to Clinton, who has trust issues for many voters and still has higher unfavorable ratings among the electorate.

The new poll said Sanders continues to maintain high favorable ratings, as 81 percent of Iowa Democrats see him favorably and only 7 percent disagree. Clinton, who also has an 81 percent favorable rating, holds a 15 percent unfavorable rating, while only 2 percent haven’t heard enough from the former New York senator.

The poll said 63 percent of Iowa Democrats say they have made up their mind with a little more than two months to go until the caucuses, while 36 say they have not.

Iowa Democrats also intimated their support for President Barack Obama’s plan to take in Syrian refugees over the next year, as 81 percent support the plan. Eighty percent of Iowa Democrats support the Hawkeye State itself taking in refugees.
