Necklaces stolen from Northwest D.C. elementary, parents say

Parents at Ward 3’s Murch Elementary say two necklaces that disappeared from an auction benefiting the school were stolen “in a selfish act.”

“That something like this could happen within our community, at of all things an event designed to raise funds for our school, is at the very least, disheartening,” the auction’s co-chairwomen, Kirsten Anderson and Courtney Bergeron, wrote on the school’s blog.

The necklaces — one quartz, one amethyst — were created and donated by a Murch parent. Originally, Anderson and Bergeron hoped someone took the jewelry by accident after the March 17 auction at the Washington Hebrew Congregation on Macomb Street.

But when weeks passed and the pieces remained at large, the women realized the necklaces were stolen and asked the Murch community for any tips to recover them.

“Stealing the necklaces was a selfish act, at odds with the generosity of spirit of so many that helped to create the event; and disrespectful of the effort expended by a Murch parent to make the beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces and her generosity in donating them,” Anderson and Bergeron wrote. “The funds that could have been used to help our students have been returned to the disappointed winning bidders. And we are all, sadly, a bit wiser about the safeguards we need to employ going forward.”
