Kate Steinle’s parents sue San Francisco for daughter’s death

Kate Steinle’s parents announced Tuesday they had filed a legal challenge to the city of San Francisco and federal officials in connection with their daughter’s murder.

Speaking to a crowd of reporters, Jim Steinle, Kate’s father, said he wasn’t just suing for his daughter, but for the safety of all the other families in San Francisco, the NY Daily News reported.

“We’re here not only for Kate; we’re here for every citizen of this country who comes to San Francisco,” he said. “If you think this can’t happen to you, think again.”

“What happened on Pier 14 was not only foreseeable, it was preventable,” added family attorney Frank Pitrie.

Kate’s alleged murderer had been deported on five separate occasions and was being held in a San Francisco jail, but was not deported due to the city’s sanctuary policy.

The other defendants in the lawsuit include San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, whose stolen gun was used in the shooting according to the San Jose Mercury News.
