E Street and Ellipse redesign decision delayed

The National Capital Planning Commission announced Thursday it was delaying its recommendation for the Presidents Park South by one week.

The commission is selecting one of five potential designers as its frontrunner for the design competition that will finally do away with the temporary jersey barriers and metal fencing on E Street near the White House’s south lawn.

Earlier this week the commission heard presentations from the designers who proposed more landscaping around a new E Street pedestrian promenade for visitors taking in the view of the White House’s south lawn and strolling around the Ellipse. The competition seeks to find a permanent-but-visually-appealing solution to the temporary security barriers put in place on E Street following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The commission has rescheduled its announcement of its frontrunner for July 7. It will pass on that recommendation to the task force in charge of the project.
