Weather still playing havoc with championships

For the second straight weekend, weather forced the Maryland and Virginia State Golf Associations to juggle schedules for their respective team championships.

In Virginia, the 36th annual Sectional Team Championship, scheduled for 36 holes, was cut to 18 due to heavy rain in Williamsburg. In Northern Virginia, the quarterfinal round of the A-Team Championship was played Saturday, but Sunday’s semifinals were postponed. The final two elimination rounds will be played back-to-back Saturday and Sunday.

In Maryland, the State A-Team Championship round of 64 was played Saturday, but Sunday’s rounds were postponed. The tournament will resume next weekend with back-to-back elimination rounds Saturday and Sunday, whittling a field of 32 to eight.

» VSGA Sectional Team. Richmond South won the rain-shortened event for the first time since 1997, toppling the favored Washington-area Northeast Section by three strokes Saturday at the Blue Heron Course at Ford’s Colony.

Three of Richmond South’s four two-man teams shot 4-under-par, best ball 68 to defeat the 19-time champion Northeast Section, 276-280. The Northeast finished second out of 13 teams, led by Kevin Dillard (Fairfax) and Craig Groenendall (Centreville), who shot a best ball 69.

» Va. Northeast Section A-Team. Two Northern Virginia big dogs were beaten in the quarterfinals Saturday. While Evergreen toppled defending champion Springfield, 10.5-7.5, Washington Golf and Country Club defeated River Creek, 10-8. River Creek was the champion in 2004-05 and runner-up last year.

Evergreen advances to a semifinal matchup Saturday with Piedmont, a winner over Mount Vernon. Washington will face Loudoun, a quarterfinal winner over Belle Haven.

» MSGA A-Team. Defending champion Breton Bay had no trouble in the opening round Saturday, dominating Wicomico Shores, 15.5-2.5.

Several traditional powers also advanced in dominating fashion, including 2004-05 champion Rolling Road, which had the most lopsided win, 16.5-1.5, over Woodholme. Ten-time champion Congressional downed Woodmont, 16-2, while Columbia, which has won a state-high 11 times, advanced with an 11.5-6.5 win over Cattail Creek.

Other local winners were Montgomery Village, Argyle, Manor, Chevy Chase, Kenwood, Lakewood, University of Maryland, and Bethesda, which needed to go to extra holes to defeat Redgate.
