Protests over the police killing of a black man continued in Charlotte on Sunday, as around 100 people gathered outside a football game holding signs and chanting “black lives matter.”
Small groups of police officers stood in riot gear around Bank of America Stadium as the Carolina Panthers and the Minnesota Vikings faced off in a National Football League game. The city of Charlotte had declared the game an “extraordinary event” under its municipal code, which means police could prevent people from carrying sharp objects into a certain area near the game.
Police said they arrested one man for carrying a concealed weapon, according to a report by the Charlotte Observer.
Charlotte has become the latest flashpoint in a controversy over the treatment of black men by white police officers. After police there fatally shot 43-year-old Keith Scott on Tuesday, protesters have marched in the city every night to protest police violence.
Police released photos Saturday of a handgun and marijuana they say Scott possessed when he was shot, although his family contends Scott was carrying a book and not a gun.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said his department expects to “expend significant public safety resources” at the stadium.
The demonstrators chanted “black lives matter.” “We don’t need no riot gear. Why are you in riot gear?” they asked the officers.
