The 29-game losing streak of Howard (1-3, 0-2) in the MEAC is partially a product of bad luck. Fourteen of the defeats have come by 11 or fewer points. This is a big opportunity for the Bison. Savannah State (1-3, 1-0) is a full MEAC member for the first time. The Tigers have won only two of their last 17 games, both against N.C. Central, which also is a full member of the conference for the first time in 2011.

No. 15 Baylor at Kansas State » Unbeaten Kansas State pulled off a shocker last week at Miami 28-24 as it denied Hurricanes QB Jacory Harris on a fourth-down run in the final minute. Saturday’s mission will be more difficult as the Wildcats face the nation’s pass efficiency leader, Robert Griffin III (236.2 rating), whose numbers are staggering: 70 completions in 82 attempts, 962 yards, no interceptions and 13 TDs. (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.)

No. 18 Arkansas vs. No. 14 Texas A&M » The game will be an introduction to life in the SEC for Texas A&M. With both teams coming off losses to higher-ranked foes, this is a virtual BCS elimination game. QBs Ryan Tannehill of the Aggies and Tyler Wilson of the Razorbacks complete 67 percent of their passes. Expect a shootout at Cowboys Stadium. Arkansas won the last two behind Ryan Mallett. (Saturday, noon, ESPN)

No. 13 Clemson at No. 11 Virginia Tech » Who is the better first-year starting quarterback: the Tigers’ Tajh Boyd or the Hokies’ Logan Thomas. Boyd, who is from Virginia and won a high school state title at Lane Stadium, has been spectacular in offensive coordinator Chad Morris’ uptempo spread. Thomas started slowly but has shown progression. (Saturday, 6 p.m., ESPN2)

No. 8 Nebraska at No. 7 Wisconsin » It’s an intriguing Big Ten matchup between the Cornhuskers’ defense, led by linebacker Lavonte David, and the Badgers’ offense guided by QB Russell Wilson. If ever there was a Big Ten team built in the image and likeness of Nebraska, it’s Wisconsin. Both are huge upfront and nimble in the backfield. There are few places that rock Saturday night better than Camp Randall. (Saturday, 8 p.m., ABC)

No. 3 Alabama at No. 12 Florida » The obvious storyline concerns the teacher, Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban, and pupil, Gators coach Will Muschamp, who served on Saban’s staffs at LSU and the Miami Dolphins. This is a clash of defenses that rank in the top five nationally and versatile backs Chris Rainey of Florida, who has 625 total yards on 74 touches, and Trent Richardson of Alabama, who has 562 total yards on 76 touches.
