Councilmember to push instant-runoff voting in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) — A D.C. councilmember wants to change the way the city elects its local leaders to boost voter participation and ensure that candidates don’t win with less than a majority.

Independent Councilmember David Grosso (GRAH’-so) says he’ll introduce a bill on Tuesday calling for the city to implement instant-runoff voting. That’s a system under which voters rank their preferred candidates to ensure the winner ends up with more than 50 percent support.
