The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday tweeted out their updated tips for parents on how to give their kids snacks.
The “snack tips for parents” tip sheet isn’t all that different from a prior tip sheet put out by USDA. For example, an earlier version of the tip sheet said kids should dip vegetables in low-fat dressing, while the updated guidance says they should dip vegetables in “low-calorie” dressing.
Other advice includes mixing nuts, dried fruit and popcorn together, drinking milk and offering whole grain snacks.
USDA also suggests not letting kids eat too much.
“Snacks shouldn’t replace a meal, so look for ways to help your kids understand how much is enough,” it says. “Store snack-size bags in the cupboard and use them to control serving sizes.”
In a separate tweet, USDA said, “Make single-serving snacks for young kids to help them get just enough to satisfy their hunger.”
