One pedestrian dead, another critical after separate accidents One pedestrian is dead and another is in critical condition after separate car accidents in D.C. and Maryland early Sunday morning.

The first pedestrian was struck about 3 a.m. on the southbound side of the Capital Beltway near Pennsylvania Avenue in District Heights, police said. The person was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A second pedestrian was struck by a car and killed about 5:30 a.m. near RFK Stadium, police said. The accident closed southbound 295 near East Capitol Street for about five hours as police investigated. The driver remained on the scene.

Police continue to investigate both accidents.

Man critically injured in Northeast shooting

D.C. police say a man shot in the head in Northeast early Sunday morning is in critical condition.

Officers were called to the 1800 block of Central Place Northeast about 1 a.m. for a report of shots fired, police said. They found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound in his head. He was unconscious and not breathing, but was revived, police said.

Authorities are investigating and have no suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call D.C. Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS.

Beltsville blaze displaces two residents

An early-morning fire in Beltsville destroyed a house and displaced the two residents, officials said.

When firefighters arrived Sunday at the single-family home on the 3000 block of Ellicott Road, they found it engulfed in flames. The building’s first floor then collapsed into the basement, officials said. There was about $150,000 in damage, but no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police swarming Washington to honor fallen

It’s Police Week in Washington, and hundreds of law enforcement officers from around the country will be swarming the city.

The week kicked off Sunday with the annual law ride, where officers rode from RFK Stadium to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in honor of officers killed in the line of duty.
