Monica Lewinsky appeared to react with disgust after two former independent counsels from the Whitewater investigation were picked to join President Trump’s impeachment defense team.
Moments after Ken Starr and Robert Ray, along with constitutional law professor Alan Dershowitz, were reported Friday morning to have been recruited, Lewinsky sent out a terse tweet.
“This is definitely an ‘are you fucking kidding me?’ kinda day,” the 46-year-old said.

More than two decades ago, the Whitewater case led to the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton for lying under oath about his affair with Lewinsky, who was a White House intern. Starr’s final report was released to the public and was published in a book called The Starr Report: The Findings of Independent Counsel Kenneth W. Starr on President Clinton and the Lewinsky Affair in 1998.
Clinton was impeached by the House over charges related to the cover-up of his with Lewinsky, but was acquitted by the Senate in 1999. Lewinsky has spoken out on a number of occasions about the public shaming she suffered in the aftermath of the incident.
“In 1998, I lost my reputation and my dignity,” she said in a speech in 2018. “I lost almost everything, and I almost lost my life.”
In 2014, Lewinsky became a contributor for Vanity Fair. She was featured in the TV documentary series The Clinton Affair in 2018 and was a producer of Impeachment, the third installment of FX’s American Crime Story.
Trump faces two articles of impeachment charging him with abuse of power in dealing with Ukraine and obstruction of Congress. The Senate trial began with a swearing-in ceremony on Thursday.
