Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney called for Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson to appear on the debate stage alongside major party candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in late September.
In a tweet, Romney argued that Johnson, a former two-term governor of New Mexico, and Bill Weld, a former two-term governor of Massachusetts, should appear in the presidential and vice presidential debates.
“I hope voters get to see former GOP Governors Gary Johnson and Bill Weld on the debate stages this fall,” Romney tweeted.

Johnson will need to win at least 15 percent support in national polling to appear on the debate stage. According to the latest RealClearPolitics average, Johnson is winning just 8.4 percent support.
Romney has been one of the more outspoken opponents within Republican circles of Trump, having campaigned with Ohio Gov. John Kasich ahead of the state’s primary and voted for Sen. Ted Cruz in the Utah primary, which Cruz won. He has not endorsed anyone for president.
Weld supported fellow former Massachusetts governor Romney for the GOP presidential in 2008, when he lost to John McCain, and 2012, when he won but went on to be defeated by President Obama in November.
The first presidential debate is set for Sept. 26 at Hofstra University. The lone vice presidential debate will take place on Oct. 4.
