Mayor-elect Vincent Gray is expected to name former D.C. deputy fire chief Kenneth Ellerbe as the District’s next fire chief. Ellerbe left D.C. last year to take over as fire chief for Sarasota, Fla.
The Washington Times last year reported that after Ellerbe took the job in Florida, he was still a paid member of the D.C. fire department. D.C. fire officials allowed Ellerbe to be placed on leave without pay so he could meet the requirement to collect on his D.C. pension when he turns 50. After the report came out, Ellerbe told TV stations in Florida that the arrangement in D.C. been stopped.
Gray’s announcement is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
