Lawmakers give mixed reviews on Donald Trump Jr. interview

A top Republican said Donald Trump Jr.’s marathon interview before the House Intelligence Committee helped dispel any notions of collusion with Russia during the 2016 elections.

However, a Democrat on the panel wants more answers from the president’s son.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., said Sunday that Trump Jr. answered every question except for very technical ones during a seven-hour interview before the House panel Wednesday.

“Nobody listening to that interview would come out of that thinking there was any collusion at all,” King said on Fox Business on Sunday.

King was referring to allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia to influence the 2016 election.

But, Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., said while Trump was “forthcoming,” he was also lacking in several answers, especially surrounding a June 2016 meeting he had with a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin.

Trump Jr. declined to discuss a follow-up conversation with his father a few days later because a lawyer was in the room and so it was subject to attorney-client privilege.

Himes said the answer was a “novel” defense.

“Every lawyer says there is no attorney-client privilege when you are talking with an attorney present,” he said on “Meet the Press” Sunday.

It remains unclear, though, if the committee will subpoena Trump Jr. for further questioning.
