Computer issues have hobbled the Virginia State Police e-mail system since last week, the Times-Dispatch reports.
Access to e-mail has been intermittent since Friday. It has not affected the state police’s ability to respond to emergencies, but it has impacted internal communications and the ability to respond to external communication with the public, a spokeswoman said.
A spokeswoman for the Virginia Information Technologies Agency, which, along with Northrop Grumman, manages the state’s system, said they’re working with the state police to restore service.
An audit released in February blasted the company’s reponse to a state computer outage last August that crippled systems at Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles and other state agencies.
The state has entered into a multi-billion dollar contract with Northrop Grumman to upgrade and manage Virginia’s computer system — a contract that was revised last April.
Northrop later chose Falls Church as the spot to relocate its corporate headquarters after a significant bidding war among D.C.-area jurisdictions.
